Ballarat is 113 kilometres
north-west of Melbourne, Victoria's capital city.
In 1851 - one of the world's biggest goldrushes began with the
discovery of gold at Bakery Hill. It became one of the world's
richest goldfields.
Gold
was discovered in Ballarat in August, 1851, by John Dunlop and James
Regan. |

On
10th of June, 1858, the 'Welcome Nugget' was found at Bakery
Hill and weighed 68956 grams.
Ballarat was also the setting of Australia's
most famous civil uprising - the Eureka Stockade on December 3rd,
1854.
